Good soul of the house, dressmaker, cook & passionate hotel manager with sensitivity. You will find Rosa at the reception, in the kitchen or in the garden, where she lovingly grows, nurtures and cares for fine Alpine herbs, Mediterranean spices, fresh vegetables and salads. Certainly not her only talent. In addition to her green thumb, she also has an eye for detail: as a trained seamstress, she provides the stylish touch in the hotel – bed linen, curtains and table linen are all home-made. There’s no need to mention it, you’ll probably think of it yourself … our Rosa is a real power woman with a deep-rooted and honest cordiality!
The first guests of the newly built farm are country school children from Schwäbisch Hall and Heidelberg. For eight D-marks they receive full board, including a view of the Dolomites. After the children, the parents come to visit, after the parents, former pupils with their own children. “The name Rabensteiner,” they say, “stands for the magic of contrasts.” And perhaps that is exactly what made the guests always come back and return.
Franz Josef marries 21-year-old Rosa Pupp from the Schloss Gravetsch estate in Villanders in 1974. Daughter Sieglinde is born in 1974, son Walter in 1976 and son Reinhold in 1980. While Rosa looks after the children and guests, Franz Josef manages the farm. He plants vines and plum trees, keeps dozens of cattle, pigs, sheep, hens and rabbits. He is always trying out the keeping of new breeds of cattle – until he finally ends up with “his” Scottish Highland cattle in 1995.
From farmer to hotelier – Franz Josef is one of the first to focus on tourism and also one of the first to understand the guests’ desire for more comfort. With a lot of dedication, hard work and sweat, numerous renovations and enlargements, the mountain farm and the former guesthouse finally become a hotel.
In 1996, the magazine “Frau mit Herz” named the Hotel Untertheimerhof “Hotel mit Herz”. We are very proud of this award and we and our team continue to strive to be warm hosts in our hotel with heart.
The alpine hut belonging to the Berglandhotel Untertheimerhof on the Villanderer Alm is newly built in 1993. After a fire in 2000, it burns out completely, but is rebuilt. From June to October, junior chef Walter organises a day trip once a week with a barbecue party on the hotel’s own alpine pasture.
One moves with the times at the Untertheimerhof. In 2002, the wellness area is built in the hotel. The children Sieglinde, Walter and Reinhold join their parents’ business. Reinhold spoils the guests as a cook, Walter, also a trained cook, works as a waiter, musician and all-round entertainer. Sieglinde studies geography and history at the University of Innsbruck, but always helps out at weekends. On the side, she is training to be a hiking guide and tour leader and travels a lot through world history. Father Franz Josef comes up with funny anecdotes from his life as a farmer and innkeeper, and Mama Rosa is the fairy godmother who performs miracles in the kitchen, in the rooms and throughout the house.
In 2007, the “life’s work” or the Rabensteiner family is portrayed and immortalised – journalist Karin Bühler wins the South Tyrolean Journalism Prize with her reportage “The World of the Rabensteiners”. The winning reportage is set to music and published in the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
In 2012, the Rabensteiner family acquired the Sonnenhotel Adler. They thus awakened these walls, some of which are steeped in history, with their rustic parlours and wine cellar from their slumber. In 2014, the Sonnenhotel Adler was expanded with a new wellness area, the “Adler Naturspa”.
In the meantime, the Rabenstein family has expanded with the children of Walter and Simone, and the children of Sieglinde and Patrick.
And today? Today, the Rabensteiner family welcomes you, dear guest, in two hotels at once: in the Berglandhotel Untertheimerhof, the meeting place for families with and without children, pleasure seekers and active holidaymakers. And of course in the sister hotel Sonnenhotel Adler, only 300 m away, the insider tip for adults, gourmets, those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers.
