This hike leads through forest and meadows to the most famous pilgrimage site in South Tyrol, the Maria Weißenstein monastery, which is well worth a visit. Numerous votive tablets demonstrate how, for centuries, the devout sought refuge and mercy from the mother of god in times of worry or distress.

Details

The comfortable hike begins at the Bar Arche car park in Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen. Trail no. 1 leads directly to the Laab Alm Alpine farm, which invites hikers to call in for refreshments, and continues to the Petersberger Legeralm Alpine farm, which is known for its vegan and vegetarian food. Trail no. 2 leads directly to the Maria Weißenstein monastery. To return, follow the E5 trail back to the starting point.

Approach

Take highway’s exit “Bolzano Nord/Eggental”, turn right direction Bolzano/Bozen, after about 0,5 km on roundabout keep left and head towards Val d’Ega (SS 241). Keep driving up to Ponte Nova. At Ponte Nova’s crossroads, turn to the right and continue to Nova Ponente (about 30 min. from highway toll booth).
