BOUNDARY PATHS PREDOI-PRETTAU – BIRNLÜCKE

At the water devide between the Mediterranean and the Black Sea… Enjoy a walk along the banks of the Ahr river, with a breathtaking view of the mighty Dreiherrenspitze and backdrop views of Austria in the distance. The Birnlücke is a more pronounced mountain saddle high above the valley end of Ahrntal and can be seen every now and again starting in Luttach. It separates the Zillertal Alps to the west from the Venediger Group to the east and is part of the water devide between the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea. There is an old at the mountain incision that used to be a very busy trade route for the exchange of goods between Ahrntal and the Pinzgau in the Austrian Salzburg region

Details

From Kasern (1,600 m) we continue on the tarred road towards the end of the valley to the Prastmann Alm where we proceed on path n. 13 along the Ahr river towards the end of the valley. After having crossed the river, we continue on the orographic left-hand side of the valley until we arrive at the Lahneralm (1,986 m). At this point we have completed a great deal of the horizontal distance, however only one third of the difference in altitude. Having crossed the alpine plain, we climb the grassy slopes in serpentines up to the Birnlückenhütte (2,441 m). From the refuge, with a direct view of the mountain saddle, we ascend on trail nr. 13 to the Birnlücke saddle (2,667 m). The trail runs from the Birnlückenhütte over the hill shoulder which represents the orographic lefthand side of the water-bearing rift which descends to the Lahneralm pasture. The Birnlücke saddle is situated at the boundary line between Austria and Italy. Follow the same way back.
