From the Timmelsbrücke bridge, follow marked trail no. 29 via the mountain huts Tomelekaser and Obergostalm towards the Schneeberger See lake. From here, follow the Knappensteig trail to the Schneeberghütte mountain hut. Continue to follow the marked trail signs, hiking up to the Karlscharte gap and down towards the Timmelsbach stream. From here, the tour heads towards the Großer Schwarzsee lake. Afterwards, head left and down towards the idyllically situated mountain hut Timmelsalm for refreshments. Descend via a comfortable service road back to the starting point on the Timmelsjochstraße road.

Starting point: Timmelsjoch street, Schneebergbrücke bridge (a) or Timmelsbrücke bridge (b) Time required: (a) 1 hour 30 minutes or (b) 2 hours Difficulty level: moderate/hard a) The old military trail winds in a serpentine fashion upward to Seemoos. b) From here you ascend at first rather steeply, then along a panoramic trail without a significant incline the rest of the way to Seemoos. From Seemoos, three ways lead to the Schneeberg mountain. The wide main trail leads further through the central valley; the very steep abbreviation just above Seemoos winds through the Puchertal valley; and the steep Knappensteig path stretches along the slope above Seemoos. The hiking circuit around the Kummersee near Corvara/Rabenstein is easily negotiated and highly worthwhile. Enshrouded in legend, the lake in the Upper Passeiertal Valley combines the splendour of the terrain with the enjoyment of hiking and an appreciation of history. In the summer months, it takes only 2.5 hours to circumvent this former lake basin situated at an altitude of 1,340 m, with an elevation gain of 350 m. Sturdy footwear and thermal, weatherproof clothing is a necessity. Be sure to always stay updated on the current weather and forecast, as well as snow conditions. The eight didactic stations along the lake route help to illustrate the story and peculiarities of these waters and surrounding territory.

Explore the evolution of the Kummersee Lake: from the “Mooseum” bunker museum to the gates of the village of Moso/Moos at an altitude of 1,007 m, follow the E5 route along trail no. 43 around the lake. You can hike across the valley basin beyond Corvara/Rabenstein in 1.5 hours. The trail veers off to the left and leads to the fascinating ruins of the old “Seehof” farmstead. Follow the short route from the Seehof ruins to Corvara and encircle the lake path, before entering the valley back to Corvara at 1,410 m. Along the route there are a number of useful info panels worth looking at. Return to Moso back along the same route.

The trail with a total length of 6.5 km goes from St. Leonhard on the left to Gomion, crosses the bridge there, and then leads to the right almost to Moos in Passeier. The trail winds along the river at water level. Halfway on, it rises in a serpentine configuration, leading through a forest and passing through a vertical wall, reaching the hamlet of Aue shortly before Moos, where the ridge again crosses the Passer river.

Hiking through Passeier Valley

The E5 (Constance – Bozen – Venice) is one of the special European routes. Almost all of the route is an Alpine route and is marked most of the way as E5. This part of the route describes the part from the Austrian / Italian border at the Timmelsjoch through the Passeier Valley to Bozen.

The way is marked always well and crosses a nature protected zone of full fascinations. This way was already committed by the smugglers.

ROUTE: Timmelsjoch – Moos – St. Leonhard

Starting at Timmelsjoch, on the north side of the Nature Park Texelgroup, you follow a wide path and then turn right onto the E5 which descends steeply into the Timmels Valley until the bridge “Timmelsbrücke”, directly on the road. Carry on along the right hand side of the valley until you reach the place Schönau and then the village of Rabenstein. Keep on the right hand side for another 20 minutes and then cross over to the other side. Repeat this two more times. From Rabenstein to Moos, the main village in the Hinterpasseier, it will take you about 2 hours. From Moos, first follow the main road towards St. Leonhard and then, after the first tunnel, turn left onto the forest pathway which will take you to the hamlet of Stuls in about 1 hour. After the Silberhütthöhe (1283m), a prehistoric find, the path goes on down to Glaiten. The E5 goes directly into the centre of St. Leonhard in Passeier.

Day Tour – total walking time: approx. 7,5 hours

St. Leonhard (693m) – Pfandler Alm (1345m) – Hirzer Hütte (2050m)

From St. Leonhard in the Passeier Valley the E5 goes to the Sarntaler Alps. Follow the signs for the Pfandler Alm. Go past the primary school and the shield farm Happerg on the Andreas Hofer path until the E5 turns off half left at a resting place. After about half an hour you come to Fartleisbach stream that cross over to reach the St. Martin road and the Pfandlerhof. At the shrine turn left onto path 1, which after a few minutes, crosses over the road to the right. Cross over the road again near the Gruberhof to reach the hamlet of Prantach. The path goes through a meadow, past a small chapel until it reaches the Pfandlerhof. The path now goes steeply through the wood, on the left is a stone wall. Carry on until you reach the Pfandler Alm, and then on further to step pastures and a wood. Keep to the left on the south face of the Riffelspitze. Now the E5 turns to the south and carries on along the west slopes of the Prantagokogels and the Kreuzjoch, through stream, alongside a wood and on to the Mahdalm. On the other side of the Grafeisenbaches (stream) you can get to the Hinteregg Alm and then on to the Hirzer Hütte (2050m) in about half an hour.

Day Tour – total walking time: approx. 6 hours

Hirzer Hütte (2050m) – Kratzberger Lake (2119m) – Meraner Hütte (1960m)

Starting at the Hirzer Hütte go on to the Tallner Alm through grass. Follow path 4 and on up to Hochkar. At the top of Hochkars through the Blockwerk and then on a rocky path up to the Hirzerscharte (2600m). It is possible to climb to the top of the Hirzer (2781m). From the Hirzerscharte, a narrow path goes down to the right until you come to a marking. Here the Hirzer route diverts off from the E5 path. Follow path 4 to the KratzbergerLake (2119m) and then along a slope with wonderful views to Missensteiner Joch (2128m). From here you go down into the hollow of Merano 2000 and then on to the Meraner Hütte (1960m).

Day Tour – total walking time: approx. 5-6 hours

Starting from the mountain station of the cable car Rosskopf Monte Cavallo (1.850m) hike along the wide path no. 23. The trail increases slightly southwestwards. Continue to walk over a mountain bridge and further on to the mountain pasture Ochsenalm (1.907m). From there follow the ridgeway under the summits Telfer Weißen to the cirque of the mountain pasture Seeberalm with the lake Seebersee. Alternative: reachable also from the valley head Ridnaun/Ridanna across the same path to the mountain pasture Prischeralm and following the path no. 23 towards the mountain pasture Seeberalm. Refreshment stop: Timmelsalm pasture

Starting at the parking lot across Timmelsbrücke bridge, take the road on the right to the main valley leading north to the Timmelsalm pasture. Crossing over the bridge behind the hut continue left in a northeasterly direction, where the Passer river winds its way across the wide Unterkrumpwasser plateau. From here, keep on the left side of the valley before reaching a hill that rises steeply in front of the Schwarzsee lake ( trail no. 30).
