From Grasstein to Puntleider lake
Bressanone, Eisack Valley & Wipp Valley
Description
A challenging hike to a picturesque mountain lake in the unspoilt landscape of the Sarntal Alps.
Details

Take the Höfestraße main road from Grasstein/Le Cave (860 m), a small village near the Sachsenklemme north of Franzensfeste/Fortezza, to the Puntleid mountain farms (1,197 m). Start the hike along trail no. 15, which climbs north from Bergltal Valley to the Berglalm mountain hut (1,534 m). At the head of the high Alpine valley the track beneath the northern face of the Tagwaldhorn mountain bends to the right and passes the remnants of Sulzenalm mountain hut (1,931 m). Near a large rock, the track turns to the right following trail no. 14 and climbs north. Cross the top of the forest line along the steep eastern flank of the Schönjoch ridge along a flat, partly exposed section towards the north. On arriving at the mountain ridge (2,050 m) head north again downhill until it meets trail no. 14 on the left across the steep western slope through the forest. Finally the trail leads to the Puntleider See lake (1,874 m). At a length over 100 m and over 200 m wide, its waters are extremely cold.

To return, head north to the steep road that leads to the Puntleider Alm (1,777 m). Follow trail no. 14 down the steep mountain path back to the Puntleid mountain farms and the forest road, from where the hike started.
