The Schlundenstein is a huge boulder above Algund, which is provided with numerous bowls. These man-made bowl-shaped depressions served in pre-Christian times as sacrificial and cult sites. In spring, the Schlundenstein is also still the longing destination of boulder fans from Central and Northern Europe. While it is still cold and stormy there, you can climb routes with difficulty levels up to 8b here on the warm rock under the Algund sun.
Details

The hike begins in the center of Algund. You walk across the Grabbachweg °25 to the left of the cemetery until you reach the Blumenthalerhof. Then follow the Ochsentodweg  29 to Thurnstein Castle. Continue until you reach the Schattmair inn. There you turn left in the direction of Vellau and walk up the ascending forest path via the Kronsbichl. Then follow trail no. 26 always in the direction of Vellau, cross the Grabbach river and reach Birbamegg. After a few forest hairpin bends you reach the Gasthof Oberlechner in Vellau and the little church “Kirchlein zur Dreifaltigkeit” with a unique panoramic view. Return back to the village via path Schlundensteinweg Nr. 25 A to the Algunder Waalweg and further to the starting point.

Approach

Via the Adige Valley, take the MeBo expressway to the Algund exit.Coming from Vinschgau, Algund is just before Merano.
