In 1494, the famous German artist Albrecht Dürer travelled for the first time to Italy. His final destination was Venice. Because of the flooded Adige valley, he had to bypass from the cloister St. Florian in Egna/Neumarkt to Buchholz/Pochi. He came across the gill of the river Lakus and passed the Roman’s bridge (“Römerbrücke”). After Buchholz/Pochi, he arrived at the Sauch pass. This road brought him to the Lago Santo Lake, where he descended to Cembra, Faver and the Segonzano Castle. During his stay in this castle, he created a few of his most important watercolors.

A Part of the path is accessible today.

Details

Starting from the Cloister St. Florian, the hiking path number 8 at the foot of the “Madruttwand” (1.507m) near the tennis court leads to the southern part of Laag/Laghetti. Following then hiking path number 7, the way leads to the “Rollhütt” cottage. Following the cobblestone road to the huge stone bridge, you leave the hiking path number 7, walking through the field and finally arriving in Buchholz/Pochi. Passing the “Speckstube Perkeo”, the hiking path number 8 (partly on the street and partly on the old road) leads to Salurn/Salorno (45 minutes from Buchholz/Pochi). In Buchholz/Pochi you can find the “garden of yearning” by Sieglinde Tatz-Borgogno. The garden showcases over 200 bronze and marble figures and installations by this sculptor set in a small deciduous wood.

If you prefer making the loop road from Salurn/Salorno to Laag/laghetti and back to the cloister St. Florian, the Dürer Path has to be leaved after the winery “Haderburg”, entering the hiking path number 1 (chapelway) “Kapellenweg”. In the “Mühlenstraße” in Salurn/Salorno, follow the hiking path number 3 direction St. Johann. Through the “Garbenstraße” (hiking path number 5, past the raised stand “Karneid”) you walk back to Laag/Laghetti.

If you prefer you can start the Dürer path also in Laghetti instead of the Cloister St. Florian (see here: To Laghetti at Pochi on the Albrecht Dürer path)
