Follow the western path no. 36 from the valley road in San Martino/Val Casies Valley all the way up to the Karbacher Hof (1440m, refreshment stop). Car park “Am Kofel” along the road below the Karbacherhof. From there you need to follow the valley Karbachtal to the hut Schäfer Alm (1616m) and further on the path no. 52 which channels of on the right side. Follow this path south-westwards through the steep wooded slopes into a pastoral small valley (roughly 1800 m). Still on the same trail (no. 52), past hay barns and the Vigeiner meadows, walk all the way up to a little hollow of the mountain ridge (ca. 2100 m) and slightly above to your right you reach the cross of the Hörneckele (2127m). From the Hörneckele, traverse the alpine slopes north-eastwards by following the red markings. At the fork of the Almweg 2000, cross the slopes towards the valley, partly evenly and partly gently descending all the way to the Pfinnalm (2152m), then to the Aschtalm (1950m, refreshment point); from there, finally descend on trail no. 10 through wooded slopes, following foot and forest paths down to the hamlet Huiben and the church in San Maddalena (1398m).

Approach

Coming from Innsbruck/Brennero (A): Drive on the Highway of Brennero (A22) until the exit Bressanone/Val Pusteria, then go on along the SS49-E66 for about 58kms until you arrive in Monguelfo. To get to Tesido and the Val Casies Valley, we recommend to take the exit West in Monguelfo. Coming from Lienz (A): You can reach us also padding by Lienz in Westtyrol (A). You have to cross the Austrian-Italian border between Ahrnbach and Winnebach (B100-E66) and drive on the SS46-E66 until Monguelfo. To get to Tesido and the Val Casies, we recommend to take the exit West in Monguelfo.
