Travel past the Haashof and to the end of the tarred road. Proceed for a short time over the narrow dirt road downhill, until a forest road (Assenweg) branches off to the left. Carry on upward along this road to a fork, keep to the right, and continue up the dirt road that ends in the middle of the high pastures at the Assen hut.
Drive to Saltaus in the Passeiertal, and 500 m after the exit turn right onto the narrow road to Tall. Continue through the hamlets of Prenn and Tall until just before the hamlet of Videgg. There will be limited parking available here.
From the car park in Lana bike uphill on the main road till you reach the Gampen Pass mountain pass. The ascent to the Gampen Pass is 19 kilometres long. The pass road runs continuously along the mountain, rising higher and higher up to the pass with no bends. In this upper stage there are only two noteworthy changes of direction to be negotiated.
Breathtaking views over the Etschtal valley can be enjoyed during the ascent. During the first third of the ascent the route passes through several short tunnels. The descent is via Nalles/Nals, 8 km south of Lana.
This moderate tour runs mostly parallel to the Caldaro High Route (Kalterer Höhenweg). Due to the cycling time of 4.5 hours we recommend to plan a whole-day tour so you can enjoy some stops and the beautiful panoramic views. From the Paterbühel in Caldaro we turn into the Via Klavenz road and cycle on the path no. 15 to Pianizza di Sopra (Oberplanitzing) and further on to the junction with the Mendola Road. Following this asphalt road downhill for 300 m we branch off to the Via Andreas Hofer road on the left. It leads us through the Ganda di Sopra settlement.
We choose the Via Badl road on the left and then the Via Piganò road to Castel Palù, and cycle through the vineyards to the Steinegger tavern. The MTB tour itself starts right here: the forest path no. 7 snakes its way through the forest uphill to Masaccio where a parking space is located right beside the Mendola Road. 150 m down the asphalt road we enter the forest again and follow the Boos forest path. After another 3 km it meets the trail no. 521 known as “Telefonsteig”.
Slightly below we turn into the path no. 9 resp. Caldaro High Route and cycle towards S. Antonio and the Ziegenstadel, a forester’s deposit. Sometimes the parallel forest path is better suited for the MTB ride. After 5 km we reach the Ziegelstadel and continue for another 3 km (signpost “Gummererhof”). The downhill ride takes us on the Zoggler forest trail and later on on a partly asphalted road to Castelvecchio (Altenburg). From this hamlet the forest path no. 11 leads us to the Caldaro sports ground. Via the hamlet of Sant’Antonio we turn back to our starting point.
If you drive below the Catinaccio and through the Latemar forest, you will reach Lake Carezza. This fairytale lake lies at the foot of the Latemar and reflects the beautiful mountain range. Lake Carezza is always a worthwhile excursion destination: in spring it is full of water while in autumn you can catch sight of the nymph on the shore who, according to legend, lives there.
The Laurin I cable car starts from Welschnofen/Nova Levante (1182 m) and you can comfortably reach the Frommer Hut (1743 m). Via the trail entrance you get to the gravel path [1A]. Follow them, which after about a kilometre leads briefly onto the main road Nigerstraße/Via Nigra, until shortly after the Ochsenhütte Hut the gravel path continues through a breathtaking alpine landscape to the Karerpass/Passo Costalunga (1752 m). Just before the Karerpass/Passo Costalunga, the descent is a little steeper along the gravel path [548] to a car park. Then turn right and follow the main road to the Restaurant Antermont (1750 m). Following the paths [21], [13] and [10], you reach the Rainbow lake of the Dolomites, Lake Carezza (1544 m). Continue on the trail “Templweg” [8] and then on trail [25A], which branches off to the right. At the next junction, turn left along trail [25] until just before the Stadl Alm hut, where trail [27] leads steadily downhill to Welschnofen/Nova Levante.
Take highway’s exit “Bolzano Nord/Val d’Ega”, turn right direction Bolzano/Bozen, after about 0,5 km on roundabout keep left and head towards Val d’Ega (SS 241). Keep driving up to Ponte Nova. At Ponte Nova’s crossroads, turn to the left and continue to Nova Levante (about 20 min. from highway toll booth).
